Common radiator bleeding mistakes and how to avoid them
Avoid the easy-to-miss bleeding mistakes that turn a simple radiator job into a messy leak or ongoing heating issue.
Bleeding radiators should be a quick, simple job, but small mistakes can leave you with leaks, stains, and pressure problems instead of cosy rooms. Understanding what can go wrong helps you avoid damage and know when it is time to call in a professional.
Key mistakes that turn radiator bleeding into a leak
Most leak issues during bleeding come down to how and when the valve is opened. The radiator itself is rarely the problem; it is the pressure, temperature, or the way the bleed screw is handled that causes trouble.

If you are already seeing rusty stains under a valve or on the wall, that usually means the problem has been brewing for a while and bleeding has simply exposed it.
Bleeding with the heating hot or over-pressurised
Bleeding a radiator while the system is hot can lead to scalding water and sudden pressure changes. The water inside is under more pressure and expands with heat, so opening a valve at this point can cause water to jet out unexpectedly.
Before you go near a bleed valve, turn the heating off and give the system time to cool. Most engineers recommend waiting at least 30 to 60 minutes so the water is warm at most, not hot. This also gives you a more accurate reading when you later check the boiler pressure gauge.
Over-opening the bleed screw
The bleed screw only needs a small turn to release air. A common mistake is spinning it several turns, which can loosen it to the point it almost comes out. At that stage, water can pour instead of trickle, and you risk cross-threading the screw when you tighten it again.
Turn the key slowly, a quarter to half a turn at a time, and stop as soon as you hear the hissing air. Once water flows in a steady stream, close it gently. If you find yourself winding the screw round and round, you have gone too far.
Using the wrong key or a screwdriver
Many older radiators tempt people to grab a flat-head screwdriver instead of a proper bleed key. This can round off the slot in the valve so the tool slips, or worse, crack the soft metal around it. Once the shape is damaged, it becomes hard to seal fully, leading to slow, ongoing drips.
Always use a radiator bleed key that fits snugly. If yours keeps slipping or the valve looks chewed up, stop before you make it worse. At that point, it is better to have the bleed valve replaced than gamble on a bigger leak.
Not protecting walls, skirts, and flooring
Water that looks clear coming out of the radiator often contains rust and sludge that can leave brown marks on paint, wallpaper, and carpets. Another mistake is underestimating how fast water can appear once the air is out.
Use an old towel or cloth directly under the valve and hold a small container or jug just beneath it. This helps catch the first splutter of water and any black sludge. Wiping the valve and radiator surface as you go also helps you spot any tiny drips that continue after you have finished.
Ignoring the condition of the bleed valve
A corroded, green, or rusty bleed valve is already telling you there has been moisture around it. If you ignore this and simply crack it open, you might disturb what is left of the seal and trigger a proper leak.
Before you start, look closely at each bleed point. If you see crusty deposits, staining down the radiator, or the valve feels loose or wobbly, do not force it. In these cases, you are often better off asking a heating engineer to replace the valve and check the system for underlying corrosion or inhibitor issues.
Overtightening and stripping the threads
Instinctively, many people try to "make it safe" by tightening the bleed screw as hard as possible at the end. This can strip the fine threads inside the valve or crack the sealing surface, which then leads to a permanent weep around the screw.
Close the valve until you feel it lightly seat, then give it a small extra nip. It should be firm, not forced. If you have to lean on the key to stop water, the valve is already damaged and will usually need replacing.
Walking away when the water will not stop
If water continues to trickle more than a few minutes after you have closed the bleed valve, do not just put a towel under it and forget. Leaving it can cause pressure loss at the boiler, wet floorboards, and hidden damage behind furniture.
Try gently re-seating the valve: slightly open it again, then close it smoothly without overtightening. If that does not stop the flow, turn the heating off, protect the area, and arrange a repair as soon as possible.

After you finish
Bleeding radiators can lower your boiler pressure, especially if several radiators were full of air. Ignoring this can trigger boiler lockouts or poor circulation.
Check the pressure gauge at the boiler and top up if needed, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Then monitor the radiators, floor, and pipework for at least 24 hours to ensure no slow drips appear and that the pressure stays stable.
What to do if a bleed valve drips after bleeding
If you notice a wet patch under the radiator or a droplet forming on the bleed screw, act quickly but calmly. First, place a container or tray underneath and use an old towel to protect the floor or skirting.
With the system off and cool, you can try gently tightening the bleed screw a fraction. Do not crank it hard; you are only trying to seat the seal. If the drip continues or the screw spins without biting, the valve is likely worn and should be replaced by a professional.
Keep an eye on your boiler pressure over the rest of the day. If it keeps dropping, or if you see stains around multiple valves or joints, it could suggest a wider system issue that needs expert diagnosis, not just repeated top-ups.
When to call a heating professional
Persistent air in the same radiator, repeated pressure changes, or staining around valves are all signs that bleeding alone is not fixing the underlying problem. You might have corrosion, a small leak elsewhere, or a system that is not correctly balanced.
